Health and Safety Policy for Gardening Yeading
Purpose and commitment: This Health and Safety Policy sets out the standards and expectations for Gardening Yeading and affiliated teams providing garden care in Yeading and surrounding areas. The policy is designed to protect staff, contractors, clients and the public while delivering professional gardening services in Yeading. Our aim is to ensure a consistent, auditable approach to safety that minimises risk without compromising quality of work.
Scope
This policy covers all routine and non-routine activities undertaken by our Yeading gardening crews, including routine garden maintenance, landscaping, hedge and tree work, turfing, planting, and use of powered equipment. It applies to permanent employees, temporary workers and authorised subcontractors. It does not replace site-specific risk assessments which must be completed before any potentially hazardous task.
Principles and risk management
We adopt a prevention-first approach to health and safety. Key principles include hazard identification, risk assessment, elimination or control of hazards, and ongoing monitoring. All jobs require a documented assessment of hazards such as: slips, trips and falls; cuts and puncture wounds; manual handling; noise and vibration; chemical exposure from pesticides or garden treatments; and risks from powered tools and machinery.Responsibilities — Responsibility for safety is shared. Senior management must provide resources, training and leadership to embed safe working practices. Supervisors and team leaders are responsible for implementing safe systems of work and ensuring toolbox talks are held. Individual staff and contractors are expected to follow procedures, use safety equipment and report defects or unsafe conditions promptly.
Training and competence
We require all operative staff to receive appropriate induction, on-the-job training and refresher instruction relevant to their duties. Training covers:- Safe operation of petrol and electric powered equipment
- Correct use of PPE and protective clothing
- Manual handling techniques and ergonomics
- Identification and safe use of plant protection products
Personal protective equipment and clothing
Appropriate PPE is provided and must be worn where risks are identified. PPE includes gloves, eye protection, hearing protection, chainsaw chaps where applicable, high-visibility clothing and sturdy footwear. PPE selection is dictated by the risk assessment for each task. Staff must inspect PPE before each use and report damage immediately.
Equipment, maintenance and safe systems — All machinery and hand tools used by gardeners in Yeading are subject to routine inspection and a maintenance schedule. Powered equipment must have guards and safety features in place and only be operated by trained personnel. Safe working distances and exclusion zones must be established for noisy or hazardous operations. Lockout/tagout procedures apply for equipment maintenance.
Chemical safety and environmental controls
The safe handling and application of herbicides, pesticides and fertilisers is mandated by our policy. Only authorised personnel may mix or apply chemicals, using the correct dilution, PPE and storage methods. Spill kits and clear disposal procedures are provided to minimise environmental impact. We prioritise low-toxicity products and integrated pest management where feasible.
Emergency procedures, incident reporting and first aid
Emergency plans are in place for serious injury, fire, major spill or adverse weather events. First aid kits are available in vehicles and at central depots, with designated first aiders trained for field response. All incidents, near misses and unsafe conditions must be reported without delay and investigated to prevent recurrence. Records of incidents are retained and used to improve safe systems of work.Monitoring, review and continuous improvement — The policy is supported by regular audits, site inspections and performance reviews. We conduct periodic health and safety reviews and adjust procedures to reflect changes in equipment, legislation and best practice. Staff are encouraged to contribute observations and suggestions for safer methods and technologies.
Contractors, visitors and public safety
When working on private or public sites our teams will take steps to protect third parties, including the use of barriers, signage and traffic management as necessary. Subcontractors must demonstrate compliance with this policy and provide evidence of competence and appropriate insurances before commencing work.Policy enforcement and culture
Safety is non-negotiable. Failure to follow established safe systems may result in disciplinary measures. Conversely, demonstrations of proactive safety leadership and strong teamwork are recognised and encouraged. By fostering a culture where safety is integral to all tasks, our gardeners and clients benefit from reliable, professional and secure garden services across Yeading and neighbouring communities.Signed on behalf of Gardening Yeading management team.
